Frequently Asked Questions
What is counselling? What happens in the counseling process?
What are the ethics of Counselling?
Professional counselors are expected to follow certain ethical code of conduct and professional practices in their work. In India we are yet to have a formal ethical code / guidelines for the same. At Inner Dawn we follow the the ethical and professional practices as defined by ITAA (International Transactional Analysis Association). We also adhere to the ACA (American Counselling Association) Code of Ethics.
What is the difference between Lay Counselling and Professional Counselling?
Lay counsellors are trained to provide support for people with emotional challenges and issues or in a difficult life situation, be it bereavement, loss or job, heart break and so on.
Professional counsellors have highly specialized training in different modalities and approaches of working with clients. They typically will have a Masters Degree in Psychology and would be trained in specialized modalities of therapy. Professional counsellors are expected in supervision – where a senior counsellor will oversee their work offline, to ensure that the services provided are of requisite quality and aligned with the client needs. Professional counsellors also are expected to be in their own ongoing personal therapy to deal with their own personal challenges and processes. Professional counsellors are expected to follow the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
Are there different types of psychotherapy?
Cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, psychodynamic therapies, humanistic therapies etc are some of the common modalities in psychotherapy. The type of psychotherapy depends on what your needs are and your therapist’s training and practice. An experienced therapist would be trained in multiple modalities and may choose their approach based on the specific client needs.
For eg., in Psychodynamic psychotherapy, apart from understanding the present challenges, you may explore and understand how your early life experiences affect and influence who you are today, bringing into awareness unconscious experiences that you weren’t aware of.
What is the difference between counselling & psychotherapy?
These two terms counselling, psychotherapy sometimes are used interchangeably. There are many similarities at the same time there are also certain differences. In Counselling the focus is on the particular problems that you are facing and the approach would be on learning new skills, problem solving etc. Psychotherapy would focus on a more broader and deeper set of issues, to understand how your patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviors affect how you deal with your life circumstances. The therapist would use empirically proven approaches, methodologies and techniques as part of the therapy process.
Will the counsellor give solutions or tell me what to do?
The counsellor may assist you to gain perspective on your situation or help you to identify and progress towards the changes you need in order to achieve the goals that you set for yourself. So no, the Counsellor does not give you instant solutions or tell you what to do and what not to do.
